Review Dell XPS 13 9380 (2019)
The Dell XPS 13 has established itself among the public that demands a high-performance laptop with a high degree of mobility. Over the years, its design has evolved surprisingly to become the center of the looks of laptops of other brands.
As a continuation of the past versions, much of the novelties of the new Dell XPS lie in the reduction of the frames and the upper bezel, where you will now find the webcam to carry out videoconferences, with a more natural position.
Another revealing fact is that Dell manages to offer an entry price below the models of previous years, but with the most basic configuration of Core i3 processor and 13.3-inch Full HD screen at a price of € 1,049.
When you jump to a Core i5-8265U processor that maintains the Full HD screen but raises its RAM memory to 8 GB, the price increases € 204. A third option of the XPS 13 with Core i7-8265U and the same Full HD screen will be found for a recommended price of € 1,379.
The most significant price jump occurs when we add solid-state drives of up to 2TB, 16GB RAM, or the 4K quality InfinityEdge Ultra HD touch screen with a resolution of 3840 x 2160, at which time the price scales until € 2,369.
The company here has applied the rule of whether good works, why change. Thus, XPS 13 of 2019 maintains the same line as its predecessors; elegant and professional, while discreet.
The line focuses on offering the best construction quality, with super-light materials so as not to affect the final weight, while guaranteeing maximum robustness to maintain the type over time.
You can find them in black, silver rose gold and white finishes. The latter has a white cover that gives the laptop a more careful line and distinction within the market.
In this way, the dimensions of the Dell XPS 13 of 2019 are as follows:
- Height: between 7.8 and 11.6 mm
- Width: 302 mm
- Depth: 199 mm
- Weight: 1.23 kg
The interwoven or woven video fiber that is present around the body of the keyboard provides great aesthetics to the device, giving it a certain personality as well as being easy to clean after days of use. In the white model, it is even more visible.
As we anticipated, one of the most notable changes compared to the 2018 version is the new location of the webcam, which has again been moved to the small bezel from its top. This makes it have to be somewhat larger, 5.9 mm compared to the previous 4 mm.
The new hinge also improves the above, ensuring greater stability of the equipment when you have it open or with a fairly wide viewing angle. However, it is still difficult to open the notebook with one hand due to the low resistance offered by the hinge.
Keyboard and trackpad
The distribution of the keys and the large touchpad area look especially good on the new Dell XPS 13, especially if the model you have in hand is the one with white finishes.
It has several levels of the backlight to facilitate its use and the path of the keys after pressing, surprised by the demonstrated agility. In general, they are spaciously favoring the fact that you do not make mistakes when pressing several at the same time.
Regarding your trackpad area, highlight how the typical pinch or enlargement gestures present an agile interaction with the Windows operating system. In this way, you will not miss the use of a mouse as additional support.
We recommend you
Here it is noteworthy that you can find two types of screens in the new XPS 13 of 2019. On the one hand, there are models with InfinityEdge UltraSharp 4K touch screen, whose resolution scales at 3840 x 2160 pixels, and on the other, Full HD models With a lower resolution of 1920 x 1080 without the possibility of choosing to be tactile.
The good news is that the second one indicated it has allowed the equipment to be considerably cheaper to be able to access a configuration at half price. Also, the battery is more efficient by having to feed a simpler panel with fewer pixels.
Specifications and performance
The XPS 13 of 2019 comes with a wide choice of 8th generation Intel Core processors, including the Core i3-8145U, the i5-8265U, and the i7-8565U. However, if you invest money in a team of these benefits, it is advisable not to choose the entry range model.
The Core i3 is the most economical, but thanks to the increased performance you get with the top processors, be sure that you have made a good investment. Even if you only intend to use it for a web environment, word processing and viewing video content, the increase in power offered by the i5 will have been worth it.
Already in the memory part, the fan opens from 4 GB to 16 GB, with dual-channel LPDDR3 modules. The storage is also very configurable with SSD drives ranging from 128 GB to 2 TB of storage.
Our tests are based on the use of the Core i7 model with 8 GB of RAM. Executing the Geekbench 4 benchmark we achieve scores of 14310, while with PCMark 10 we reach a value of 4009.
Extrapolated and compared to other equipment on the market, it should be noted that the performance is within the average offered by other equipment such as Asus ZenBook 14. It is something you can see in the performance graph that we attached.
In the area of graphics, do not expect to use the Dell XPS 13 for gaming– intensive environments such as demanding games. We depend on the integrated Intel UHD 260 graphics, so we can only address the execution of sporadic games.
For its part, the value obtained from 4698 in 3DMark indicates that it is suitable for handling video editing and photo editing tools.
Dell XPS 13 9380 (2019) Review
Autonomy and connectivity
Dell guarantees that with the Full HD screen model you can reach 21 hours of autonomy, but it is certainly a very optimistic figure. With our tests and the screen brightness at 40%, we play a video in loop mode and get times of 11 hours and 19 minutes.
They are positive values that exceed those offered by the XPS 13 edition of the previous year in more than 30 minutes. This means that by making light use of the equipment, you can perfectly face a full day’s work.
For connectivity purposes, within the limitations of this type of mobility-oriented equipment, we have two Thunderbolt 3 ports with power delivery, another DisplayPort port, and a third USB C port.
There is also room for a microSD card reader and the typical mini-jack for headphones. You can use the adapter included with the device to connect devices and pen drives with a traditional USB connector.
We are aware that the main changes introduced in the XPS 13 range of 2019 lie inside, with the new generation of 8th generation Intel Core processors with higher performance, clock speeds, and improved energy efficiency.
However, there are also small changes such as the position of the webcam, a much more natural place to conduct video conferences. We like the variety of models to choose from, and Dell offers a wide range to best fit the particular needs of each.
